The “Detroit Tigers” theme was a very interesting addition to decorations and the color scheme. The “Cake” was a tower of cupcakes and a little “Tigers” theme cake.

Then the fun began…

It started with a Live Duet for the Bride and Grooms first dance.

Then before we knew it, the Party had Begun…

The entire night, the dance floor was full of fun and enjoyment. A great play list plus a great family equals memories that will last forever. When it came time for the Wedding DJ to play the final song, it was dedicated as a special request from the Bride. The DJ waited a second as the room fell silent in anticipation. Then the song “We are the Champions” by Queen began to play and an energy filled the room!

Weddings are filled with many different traditions and rituals.

Cutting the wedding cake is certainly among the most significant acts that the married couple will do at the wedding reception. It is a moment that symbolizes so many things including the couple’s fertility, the first act performed together and the beginning of their new life. It is a sentimental moment that is also very festive.

Cutting the cake can be a clean, classy moment or a messy, goofy one, depending on your preference. Many couples these days end up smearing the cake into each others faces and have fun with it. The older generation seems to think this act is distasteful and not very elegant. When it boils down to it, if the bride and groom wants to have fun with their wedding cake, no one can tell them otherwise.

Which brings me to the reason for this Wedding Secrets article.
When to cut the wedding cake?

The experts say that the cake should be cut during the last hour of the reception, after guests have danced-off dinner, because it’s time for dessert and coffee as the party is winding down. Also, the wedding cake cutting tends to be a signal to guests that the reception is coming to an end. So keep in mind that if you cut the cake too early things could start wrapping up and some of your guests may decide to leave sooner. By this guideline, there should be about 45 minutes remaining of the event for your guests to dance off the cake (provided you have a great wedding DJ that will get them back onto the dance floor).

There are many things to consider when deciding the right time to cut the wedding cake.

Will some of your wedding guests be needing to leave early? A lot of times younger children will need to get home for bed and the older generations may also need to get their rest

Do you want to serve the wedding cake as a Dessert? Some weddings have a separate cake to serve just for dessert and still save the wedding cake for the cutting ceremony later in the evening

Are you wanting to get the typical wedding reception events out of the way so you can just kick back and enjoy your evening? Some couples may want to just do everything all at once to get it out of the way. This option can lead to complete chaos. Your guests will then meander off into their own agendas and your wedding dj will be forced to keep playing dance music all night long without any breaks for your guests to enjoy. As a wedding DJ, I don’t recommend this option. It can be done with a great wedding DJ (such as myself) but there is too much time for your guests to get bored and less interested in your special day.

So keep in mind there is no written rule as to when you must cut the cake, merely guidelines. Ultimately, you have the choice to decide what time works best for your reception.

On your special day you can’t leave anything to chance. “The DJ can make or break a wedding”.  If that is the case, I always suggest to stay away from the idea of having a friend or relative DJ your wedding, and try to avoid working with a company who would “assign” you your Wedding DJ. You may be in for a complete disaster.

If you are planning or have planned a wedding, at this point you know that there are many, many wedding DJs and wedding DJ companies out there. Some of the bigger companies out there like to book clients for weddings and then assign one of their roster DJs to work the gig.  For the owner it is an efficient way to book the DJs with open dates, but is it really the best way to hire a DJ for your wedding?

I am not saying you can’t get a great DJ from a major DJ company with a host of DJs on the roster. I’m saying that you should be aware that in many cases the DJ company chooses who will work instead of the client. If you choose to go with a larger DJ company, make sure you get to know your wedding DJ right away and ask a lot of questions before you sign a contract. The program or package may sound like it will work perfectly for your special day, but keep in account that it will still be up to a person to deliver top notch service. He or she could be dressed well, know what music you want, but just not be the right wedding DJ for you. Reading the words to a beautiful song is different than hearing it sung by a professional. Your actual DJ should showcase their skills for you ahead of time.

As the owner/DJ of BookThatDJ.com, I enjoy the luxury of complete DJ quality control. When I meet with a client, they know they are getting me. If I am already booked for the date they are planning for, I tell them up front that I will not be able to be their DJ. At that point, I either suggest another DJ that I know will provide excellent service, and I give them advice to help them with their search.

Before a Wedding DJ from Book That DJ (which would be myself) plays the first song, they ask questions, and do lots of listening. When our Wedding DJs meet with a future bride and groom, they like to get an idea of what they are all about.  Get to know their likes, and more importantly their dislikes.  The good Wedding DJ has them paint a mental picture of what they imagine their wedding day to be like, so that the DJ can do their part in making that vision come true.

As the DJ, I coordinate all of the formalities, develops a time-line (agenda) with the couple and around their courses at their reception and is as much of a resource to them as possible.

3. Our Planning Process.

Once you place your deposit to save the date with Book That DJ, the process begins. We give you a “DJ Planner” for you to fill in the blanks. This lets us know who is in your wedding party, who the parents are, and what songs you want us to play. Once you have a majority of the planner filled in, we meet with you again to go over it in detail. We confirm name pronunciation, so we aren’t messing up during announcements. We also play your important songs for you, in order to confirm the correct version and title. A few weeks before your event, we will meet with you again and go over the timeline, make suggestions, and confirm any special requests. There are many more details about our planning process that we only disclose with our clients. That way our ideas and service stays original.

At BookThatDJ.com we specialize in Weddings. However, before we entered the wedding industry we spent several years in the club and bar scene.
